Alumina ceramic’s application in automotive sensors

With good comprehensive properties, alumina (Al2O3) ceramics are used widely and well. Alumina (Al2O3) ceramics are rich in raw materials, low in price, high in strength and hardness, resistant to thermal shock, good in insulation, chemical stability, and adhesion to metals. At present, Al2O3 is the main material of ceramic plate. According to Material Institute of Stanford University, the Rockwell hardness of aluminum oxide (Al2O3) ceramics is HRA80-90, which is is only second to diamond and superior to the wear-resistant steel and stainless steel in terms of wear resistance. The wear resistance of alumina (Al2O3) ceramics 266 times higher than the manganese steel and 171.5 times higher than high-chromium cast iron. The density of alumina (Al2O3) ceramic is 3.5g/cm3, only half of that of steel, which can greatly reduce the load for the equipment.

The sensors in the automobile are in a harsh environment (high temperature, low temperature, vibration, acceleration, humidity, noise, exhaust gas) for a long time. They are required to be small and light, have good re-usability, and have a wide output range. However, ceramics can protect chips from corrosion even in the harsh environment by their natures of high temperature resistance, vibration resistance, moisture resistance and chemical corrosion resistance.
